Though it may not be well represented in mainstream culture, naturopathic or alternative medicine can be a great way to improve your health.
A lot of the modalities are not fully embraced by the scientific community, simply because they cannot be seen, or measured in traditional ways.
The proof is in the results though, and there is evidence of reflexology being practiced in ancient Egypt and China, and the knowledge of chakras is said to date back to second century B.C.E India, and there is even evidence of them in Native American and Norse lore.
Myofascial release
“Even if it’s an old injury, sometimes you don’t have time to take care of it, you may have to be the bread-earner of the household, so you have to keep going no matter what, so you decide to ignore that sore spot and you go on day by day and you don’t really realize maybe how bad it got until it starts to feel a little bit better,” said Pearl Smith, Registered Massage Therapist and Specialist in Myofascial Release.
Myofascial release (MFR) is a gentle, deep, authentic form of healing that works with the connective tissue, or fascia, of the body.
Fascia is a fibrous web of connective tissue surrounded by a gelatinous substance. Think if it as pantyhose that surrounds your muscles and helps them to move more easily against each other.
When your body is traumatised or injured, that gelatinous substance hardens, making it more difficult for the muscles to move against each other, which in turn causes pain. If the fascia is restricted, then blood vessels, muscles, bones and organs will not work properly.
By applying gentle, prolonged pressure, the therapist can manipulate the fascia and help it return to its jellylike state.
MFR is beneficial to just about any physical ailment, whether you have arthritis, headaches, or any kind of pain from new or old injuries. It also can help with women’s health issues, infertility and neurological dysfunction.
There are several documented scientific studies out now which show that fascia and tissue can hold memory and emotions. According to John F. Barnes, pioneer and practitioner of MFR, it is almost as if your consciousness is in your fascia, not just in your head as science has led us to believe up until now. Because of this, MFR release can also be an emotional therapy.
There are three components to MFR: hands-on therapy, which is the gentle pressure mentioned earlier; myofascial unwinding, which helps release any emotions that may be holding you back from a full recovery, and myofascial rebounding, which uses the fluid in the body to make waves to put things back in order. MFR can sometimes be slightly painful depending on your issue, but it has been proven to be very effective.

Massage therapy
Massage is the manipulation of soft tissues in the body using friction or kneading techniques as well as tension, motion or vibrations to help muscles, ligaments, joints and tendons to function better and facilitate the healing process. Getting a massage is also a great way to relax and unwind.
Along with increasing athletic performance, massage has multiple benefits. Stress relief is the most obvious, but massage can also aid in recovery from an injury, and help alleviate back and neck pain, and also improve quality of life for those with chronic conditions such as fibromyalgia and arthritis.
It can help stimulate the immune system, and certain types of massage can help make childbirth easier.
According to Massage Therapist Jewel Giesbracht from Fairview, there are not a lot of conditions involving soft tissue that massage cannot help with.
Whether you are looking for relaxation, rehabilitation, or a natural form of pain management, massage can help.
Giesbracht, who works exclusively out of Clear Body Image & Wellness Spa, practices deep tissue, therapeutic, and relaxation massage, but specializes in sports injury rehabilitation.

Reflexology and energy healing
Some other services offered in the area are Body Management, Chakra Balancing, Vibrational Healing, Foot Reflexology and Reiki.
Most of these modalities are natural forms of preventative medicine.
They are all about balancing your body and learning to function in your body to keep it healthy for the long run.
Reflexology is the science of applying pressure to certain nerve endings (also called pressure points) in the feet, hands and ears.
These pressure points are said to be connected to certain areas of the body, and when manipulated, can cause a physical change in those parts of the body.
Reflexology can help with many things, such as reproductive issues, headaches, and general stress relief.
Vibrational Therapy and Chakra Balancing go hand-in-hand.
Chakra balancing uses a pendulum to test if the body’s energy systems, aka chakras, are balanced.
Vibrational Therapy uses smells, sounds, thoughts and tastes to help balance these energy systems.
Chakras are described as “force centers” or coils of energy emanating from seven different points on the body.
Each point represents a different major organ or aspect of our being. Basically, our chakras receive and transmit energy from and to our environment, including people or things we come in contact with, which is why you may feel other people’s moods affecting you.
Body Management, which is the gentle manipulation of skeletal and soft tissues in the body to get them back into alignment so that the body can work properly, uses both physical and energetic vibrations as well as different essential oils to help balance the chakras.
This therapy can be beneficial for people with gastrointestinal problems, or misaligned hips, among other things.
Finally, Reiki is a hands on or hands off form of energy work that uses symbols to focus energy into the body so that it can be balanced, and facilitate healing.
According to Louise L. Hay, author of You Can Heal Your Life, sometimes certain emotional conflicts can cause physical blockages.
Our emotions are our guidance system, and when you are not able to allow your emotions to flow, or acknowledge them, they get stored inside of you, and it can create a damming effect in your body.
Depending on what you hold on to, that is where the blockages manifest.
For example, neck pain could mean you have trouble seeing things from other people’s perspectives or different directions that your life could take.
The pain manifests there because they are, metaphorically, only looking straight forward.
“I really believe that this is a good pathway to take, even if you’re not sick, to help prevent yourself from becoming ill, because if you don’t have your health, you don’t have anything,” said Kortney Skaley of An avra Holistics.
“A lot of what I do is help people deal with their stress. There’s a lot of talking, and getting people to speak about things that are stressing them out.”
Skaley also explained that many people get nervous about bringing those feelings out in the open.
“A lot of people start to clam up when they get in here, thinking ‘what I have to deal with is so bad’, or ‘what I’ve done is so bad’, and it’s just because they have the emotional connection,” she explained.
“That is what is causing the imbalance, so if they are able to release that, it will in turn create health in your body.”
